Your Soul is trying to get your attention, are you listening?

A few years ago, I was in the midst of my meditation teacher training and sound therapy certification programs, what I affectionately refer to as “my soul awakening.”  In the middle of this transformation, I met up with a friend from college, whom I had not seen in a while. After catching up on our current lives and activities, this friend exclaimed, “Wow! You are really passionate about what you are doing these days!”

“It feeds my soul!” I excitedly blurted out.

I wondered, “What do you do to nourish your soul?”

A shadow of sadness passed over her face and her eyes.  “I don’t do anything. I don’t even know what feeds my soul?”

Moving through trainings and transformations, I realized that I was asking the wrong question.  It is not easy to nourish Soul when we do not know how to listen to Soul.

Oh my soul, you come and you go

Soul is trying to get your attention; do you know how to listen with your “soul ears?”  I like to think about Soul language as being our first language, when we were acutely aware of our internal world…we listened and responded.    Before we can feed the soul, we must remember the ways that Soul tries to get our attention.

Soul communicates with us every day, all day.

Soul communicates in the only way it knows, using the language of our senses:

  1. Thoughts & memories
  2. Feelings & emotions
  3. Bodily sensations
  4. Coincidences/synchronicities
  5. Hearing/seeing/noticing what is around you

I have come to understand that there are no random thoughts, feelings, sensations and experiences, but rather these are ways Soul tries to get our attention.  Turning inwards and listening through our senses cultivates curiosity and awareness, allowing space to hear with “soul ears.”  Meditating, yoga, being in nature and playing the singing bowls are ways that allow me to “hear” my soul speaking to me.

Just as we each move through the world in our own way, there is not “one-way” to begin to tune in, listen and nourish soul.

Sometimes, I simply start by asking the good questions, “what does Soul want me know?” and “how is this here to help me?”
